Physiological Actions Of Testosterone

Testosterone is the most important sex hormone in males, and it has multiple physiological functions. These roles can be dichotomized into two major categories:

1. Androgenic effects, which are related to reproductive function and to the development of male secondary sex characteristics.

2. Anabolic effects, which are related more generally to the stimulation of tissue growth and development.

A complete discussion of these categories is beyond the scope of this chapter. What follows, instead, is a brief overview of testosterone's major androgenic and anabolic effects.
