Ltp May Equal Memory In The Amygdala

Subsequent work by several groups has indicated that the relevant LTP is probably of a mixed etiology. It appears that both NMDA receptor-dependent and independent LTP is involved. Moreover, a number of sophisticated molecular studies are underway probing the biochemical basis of LTP in the amygdala. Thus far, the forms of LTP involved appear to be indistinguishable from those types we have been discussing in the context of hippocampal synaptic plasticity.

Overall, this work suggests that LTP at the CS-lateral nucleus synapses is sufficient to mediate the alteration in behavior. The papers are landmark publications in the history of the learning and memory field— the first demonstrations of LTP triggered in vivo by environmental signals. It thus is clear that LTP can happen in vivo, with endogenously occurring, natural patterns of neuronal firing, triggered by salient environmental signals.
