Current MRI grading systems of articular cartilage damage are based on modifications of the Outerbridge classification, originally described for surgical grading of patellar lesions . The original surgical Outerbridge classification is based on size of surface fragmentation and fissuring. The MRI modification of the Outerbridge classification incorporates the depth of the lesion from the articular surface. In addition several MRI classifications have been proposed for grading osteochondral lesions [54,55].
