I Systemic * pH

( Negative-feedback control of endogenous "acid production. The addition of an exogenous acid load or increased endogenous acid production result in a fall in pH, which, in turn, inhibits the production of ketone body acids and lactic acid. A base load, by raising pH, stimulates the endogenous production of acids. This negative-feedback mechanism attenuates changes in blood pH. (From Hood VL, Tannen RL. Protection of acid-base balance by pH regulation of acid production. N Engl J Med 1998,339:819-826.)

Essentials of Human Physiology

This ebook provides an introductory explanation of the workings of the human body, with an effort to draw connections between the body systems and explain their interdependencies. A framework for the book is homeostasis and how the body maintains balance within each system. This is intended as a first introduction to physiology for a college-level course.
