AV! AV2 Aortic volume

Relationship between aortic volume and pressure. A, aortic compliance is independent of aortic volume. The change in volume (AVj) causes the change in pressure (APj). The same change in volume (AV2) at a higher initial volume causes a change in pressure (AP2) equal to APj. B, aortic compliance decreases as aortic volume increases. The change in volume (AVj) causes the change in pressure (APj). The same change in volume (AV2) at a higher initial volume causes a much larger change in pressure (AP2).

The above discussion shows that the influence of stroke volume on pulse pressure depends on the mean arterial pressure. As mean arterial pressure increases, arterial compliance decreases. As arterial compliance decreases, a given stroke volume causes a larger pulse pressure.

Essentials of Human Physiology

This ebook provides an introductory explanation of the workings of the human body, with an effort to draw connections between the body systems and explain their interdependencies. A framework for the book is homeostasis and how the body maintains balance within each system. This is intended as a first introduction to physiology for a college-level course.
