Antimicrobial Defense

In addition to physical removal of microorganisms and other noxious materials by mucociliary transport, an important line of defense is provided by the surface fluids that contain macrophages, basophils and mast cells, leucocytes, eosinophils, and antibacterial/antiviral substances that include immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, lysozymes and interferon. These cells and substances discourage microbial colonization and enhance the protective properties of the sinona-sal mucosa against infections.
