A dimensioned graph of Equation 5.5-15 is shown in Figure 5.3-7. The peak r(x) occurs at x = 0+: r(0+) = (a2/y2)(A + B + Ako/a). The minimum r(x) occurs at x = 0-: r(0-) = (a2/y2)(B - Ako/a). In order for r(0-) > 0, it is clear that B > Ako/a. The shape of r(x) suggests that LI performs an edge enhancement function, as well as boosting high spatial frequencies. Just to the left of the light step, the resultant frequencies are reduced, making the dark edge of the step appear darker. Just to the right of the step, the resultant frequencies are raised, making the light edge appear lighter, accentuating the edge.
