A transconductance amplifier or voltage-controlled current source (VCCS) is used to force a known current, Iin, into the axon's center. The membrane potential, Vm, is monitored by a glass micropipette microelectrode that penetrates the axon membrane and is connected to a unity-gain, buffer amplifier. The command signal, Vs, and Vm are compared at the summing junction of a fast, high-gain op amp with gain, -Kv. The op amp output, V2, drives an (ideal) VCCS with transconductance, Gc.
