This section examines two embellishments on the basic HH model: (1) A computer model of a voltage clamp experiment where Vm is electronically forced to follow a desired input, Vs. (2) Models for other, recently described, gated ion channels in nerve membrane.
Evidence from early voltage clamp experiments on squid axon on how the bulk current densities, JNa and JK, behave with Vm and dVm/dt provided the basis for Hodgkin and Huxley's (1952) dynamic model for the electrical and ionic behavior of a patch of active nerve membrane. Using Simnon, it is relatively easy to simulate the control electronics of the voltage clamp apparatus along with the HH model for nerve membrane. A circuit for a simple voltage clamp is shown in Figure 1.4-12.
