additively with weights dependent on their locations. Some subsynaptic potentials may have to propagate along passive dendrites, over the surface of the soma, to the SGL. Because of the lossy RC cable properties of dendrites, the potentials are effectively low-pass-filtered, delayed, and attenuated before they sum at the SGL. psps arising on the surface of the soma fare better; they are attenuated, but far less than those arising peripherally on dendrites. Thus, they have more weight relative to spike generation.
