Based on the Nernst equation, the K+ equilibrium potential (EK) is determined by the transmembrane K+ concentration gradient:

where (RT/F) is 25.26 at 25 °C; and [K+]out and [K+]cyt denote extracellular and cytoplasmic K+ concentration, respectively. According to the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz (GHK) equation, the reversal potential (£rev) or zero-current potential is a function of the Na+, K+, Ca2+, and CI" concentration gradient across the plasma membrane and the relative ion permeability (P):
