male systems. Our discussion will include the primary sex organs—testes in males and ovaries in females—that produce gametes and serve endocrine functions. It will also include the accessory sex organs—the ducts through which the gametes pass as well as various glands that empty into those ducts. In humans, the breasts are also considered accessory sex organs. We will also refer on occasion to secondary sexual characteristics, which are not directly involved in reproduction, but comprise the external differences between males and females.
