We will begin this survey with the pituitary gland because it plays a central role in the endocrine system. The pituitary is a link between the nervous system and many other endocrine glands. It secretes some hormones that are actually produced by neurons in the brain, and under the influence of still other brain hormones, it produces a number of its own hormones, which control the activities of various endocrine glands throughout the body.
