Hypothesis: Medium-sized boulders have more species growing on them than either smaller or larger boulders because they are subjected to intermediate levels of disturbance.

METHOD Sterilize a number of small boulders. Secure some of them to the natural substratum with glue. Leave other boulders unsecured to serve as controls. Observe accumulation of species on the boulders over time.

RESULTS Secured small boulders accumulate many more species than unsecured small boulders.
