Gamma knife radiosurgery is an effective method of delivering radiation to patients with a hypersecretory pituitary tumor when administered appropriately. This treatment should be administered only to patients who have not responded to other treatments, surgery, and/or medical treatment, with the goals of achieving restoration of normal secretion of the excessively produced pituitary hormone and of preventing tumor growth. The definitive results of Gamma Knife radiosurgery for pituitary adenomas remain to be determined. Improved outcomes for patients with a secretory tumor have occurred with more experience and a larger number of patients treated, as shown by our current results compared with an earlier report (15). Gamma Knife radiosurgery is an evolving area of treatment that requires continued careful assessment.
