How Caregivers Can Help

• Encourage questions.

• Explain what tests and treatment are for, what's involved, how the patient might feel afterward, and when results will be available.

• Ensure that a patient taking steroids has a thorough understanding of the regimen, especially how to handle illness and emergencies. Encourage the patient to wear a Medic-Alert bracelet (or similar identification). A take-home information sheet would be useful.

• Let patients know the anticipated regimen of tests, so they know and can explain to others (e.g., employers).

• Let patients know the results when available and explain the results during consultations.
