• Encourage questions.
• Explain what tests and treatment are for, what's involved, how the patient might feel afterward, and when results will be available.
• Ensure that a patient taking steroids has a thorough understanding of the regimen, especially how to handle illness and emergencies. Encourage the patient to wear a Medic-Alert bracelet (or similar identification). A take-home information sheet would be useful.
• Let patients know the anticipated regimen of tests, so they know and can explain to others (e.g., employers).
• Let patients know the results when available and explain the results during consultations.
