Several methods are available for predicting mature height: each considers different variables and is an estimate only.10 12 Standards. Tables 2-1 and 2-2 are Fels parent-specific standards for height.10 They are sex- and age-specific and arc calculated by adding the biologic mother's height to the biologic father's height in centimeters and dividing by two. This parental midpoint should estimate the height of the child at specific ages. Tanner and colleagues found that height at 3 years, more so than at any other age. showed a good correlation with mature height." He developed the following formulas:

Height (cm) at _ 1.27 x height at age maturity (male) ~ 3 years + 54.9 cm

Height (cm) at _ ! .29 x height at age maturity (female) 3 years + 42.3 cm

Interpretation. Due to genetic influences, some children may be taller or shorter than average. Estimations may be helpful in evaluating short stature. The growth patterns of other family members may also be helpful in determining the correct diagnosis in such instances.12 Short stature during childhood and adolescence should be evaluated to determine whether it is a normal variation or whether it indicates an underlying caloric deficiency or disease.
