Terminology and Classification

Removing one or more of the bony walls that make up its surrounding can decompress the contents of the orbit. The largest potential amount of decompression is obtained by removing the medial wall of the orbit, next its floor, and then its lateral wall. Decompression can be achieved externally, although the amount of dissection that can take place toward the orbital apex is limited because of reduced visibility and pressure on the orbital contents (Fig. 14.39). Many techniques have been described for decompressing the orbit transan-trally, or via a subconjunctival or subciliary incision.
