If a decision is made to use computer-aided surgery, a CT (or MRI) scan is done preoperatively using axial slices of 1 mm thickness at 1 mm intervals. The format often depends on the manufacturers' specification. Some systems require a headframe to be worn during the preoperative CT scan. The CT data can be transferred to the computer in the operating room on a magnetic/optical disk or digital tape. Calibration of the instruments is mandatory and each instrument is checked prior to the operation to verify its accuracy (Caversaccio et al., 1999).
