There are two main uses for these instruments: the first is for the removal of polyps and redundant mucosa; the second is to remove bone as well. It is important not to forget to send any collected material for histological examination. These instruments have the advantage of cleanly cutting through soft tissue, which reduces the amount of bone that is left exposed at the end of the procedure (Fig. 10.27). The versions that can remove bone need to be used with the utmost care in order to avoid very serious complications. It is safest to remove bone around the orbit or the skull base with instruments that provide more feeling and information about the quality of the tissue in that area. tJVD 6
