The Hajek is a safe instrument because it cannot go through a bony structure but can only remove bone that its leading beak can get around. The micro-Hajek is even more precise than other punches and is particularly helpful along the skull base (Fig. 10.19a, b).
The rotating locking mechanism allows its end to be angled in any direction and then locked with a rotating cuff. This helps to avoid its handle hitting the endoscope and means that one instrument will do for most circumstances. This is also a good instrument for removing the majority of the anterior lacrimal crest in order to minimize the amount of bone that needs to be drilled in an endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.
