The long-shanked drill with extra-long burrs allows drilling to be done within the nose without scuffing or abrading the surrounding mucosa. It delivers irrigating fluid near the end to stop the burr from heating up. Extra-coarse diamond burrs have been produced to help removal of bone where it is thick, for example, the beak of the frontal recess or the anterior lacrimal crest.
