Bifid Middle Turbinate

The degree of bifidity of the middle turbinate can vary from a shallow groove on its medial aspect to a deep one that almost divides it in two (Fig. 6.21 a, b). A bifid middle turbinate will often only be seen if you examine the medial surface, and its bifidity can be confirmed on CT (Fig. 6.22a, b). When the groove almost splits a bifid middle turbinate into two, the bifidity can make it look like two turbinates or a paradoxical unci-nate process and a middle turbinate. Whether it is a bifid middle turbinate or a paradoxical uncinate process can be found by following the lateral surface of the lateral bulge to define whether the groove has a blind end or one that continues upward out of reach into the middle meatus.
