Extrinsic compression of the celiac axis by the median arcuate ligament can simulate a celiac axis stenosis. Often this has a characteristic appearance in which the celiac axis is pulled inferiorly. This extrinsic compression varies with respiration, and thus may appear more or less severe, depending on the patient's degree of inspiration or expiration. Although usually asymptomatic, there have been reports of relief of abdominal symptoms following surgical release of a severe extrinsic compression.
