Conventional coronary MRA techniques display the coronary blood-pool along with surrounding structures including the chest-wall, myocardium, ventricular and atrial blood-pools, and great cardiac vessels (Figs. 1-4). This representation of the coronary lumen is not directly analogous to the information provided by x-ray coronary angiogra-phy, in which the coronary lumen displaced by contrast agent is depicted exclusively. Analogous "luminographic" data may be obtained using MR arterial spin tagging . This technique enables exclusive and selective 3D visualization of the coronary blood-pool without user-assisted segmentation or post-processing (Fig. 5). However, despite its potential, the technique inherently doubles the acquisition time and is sensitive to misregistrations. Consequently, very efficient motion compensation mechanisms are required.
