gangliosides make an important contribution to the characteristic immunoexpression of individual cell types. Fourth, they act as binding sites for a number of important compounds. Originally, several toxins, such as tetanus toxin, botulinum toxin and cholera toxin, were shown to interact tightly with gangliosides, but there is now some indication that they may function as receptors for interferon and for certain cell-growth and differentiation factors. Brief reference to the role of glycosphingolipids in the immune system, espe cially in relation to cancer, can be found in Section 4.4.2.
