Genetic predisposition plays an important role in the development of hypertension in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The higher prevalence of hypertension in certain ethnic groups, such as African Americans, suggests the role of genetic factors (5). Diabetic patients with hypertension are reported to have high frequencies of family history of hypertension (23). Elevated levels of sodium-lithium countertransport activity (24,25) and sodium-hydrogen countertransport activity (26) have also been found to play a role in the genetic predisposition to hypertension.
