"Black bass" is a common name for all species and subspecies of the genus Micropterus, which belong to the Cen-trarchidae family of sunfish. These include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, redeye bass, spotted bass, Suwannee bass, and Guadalupe bass. Black bass are strictly freshwater species, and they are more elongated and generally larger than their family relatives.
The term should not be confused with the various sea bass that are members of the Serranidae family of saltwater fish, some of which have a physique similar to that of species in the genus Micropterus.
