The cranium

The examination of the cranium in infancy and childhood can be very valuable. In the adult, inspection may reveal generalised enlargement in Paget's disease or localised bony bossing overlying a meningioma. The supraorbital ridges often enlarge in acromegaly as a result of increase in the size of the frontal sinuses.

In cranial arteritis the temporal arteries may be visibly or palpably enlarged and tender (Fig. 2.32). On auscultation a bruit may occasionally be detected in the presence of an intracranial arteriovenous malformation (Fig. 2.33).
