Examination Of The Urine

Useful diagnostic information can often be obtained from analysis of the urine. Indeed, significant kidney disease may develop without specific symptoms or signs, bul is usually accompanied by urinary abnormalities. Urinalysis may also indicate disorders which do not primarily affect the kidneys, such as glycosuria in diabetes mellitus.

Urinalysis should therefore he performed on all new patients. It is particularly important in patients presenting with:

• symptoms of kidney or urinary trad disease

• thirst and/or polyuria

• hypertension

• pyrexia of uncertain origin (PUO).

Some of the clinical uses of urinalysis are shown in Table 5.34 and the main components of the examination are shown in Table 5.35. It is essential that microscopic and bacteriological examinations are performed on a freshly voided urine sample.
