The cerebellum plays an important role in the coordination of voluntary, automatic and reflex movement. The anatomical subdivision of the cerebellum into the midline vermis and the lateral cerebellar hemispheres is useful in clinical practice.
• The nucleus of llie vermis has multiple interconnections with the vestibular nuclei and is important in the maintenance of body posture and equilibrium.
• The cerebellar cortex and subcortical nuclei are important in smoothing and synchronising the timing of muscle contraction and relaxation when the limbs are moved. One lateral cerebellar hemisphere controls limb movement on its own side.
The cerebellum also rcceivcs information from the spinal cord (spinocerebellar tracts), motor cortex (via the pontocerebellar fibres) and brain stem (red nucleus, reticular nuclei and the inferior olivary nuclear complex).
