Cataplexy in the narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome was discussed in Derangements of the Sleep Process. Cata-plexy is very rarely associated with acquired brain stem lesions. Cataplexy may be seen in Niemann-Pick type C, Norrie disease, the Prader-Willi Syndrome (136), and as an isolated familial trait. Recognition is based on the identification of emotional triggers, especially laughter, to the sudden loss of muscle tone. A cataplexy-like dis order is seen in the Coffin-Lowry syndrome (137) and described in the next section.
