During pregnancy, it would be best to avoid whenever possible the use of ionising radiation and all examinations emitting them, such as abdominal-X-ray, barium meal, barium follow-through or computed tomography, given their likely teratogenic, genotoxic and carcinogenic effect , particularly during the first trimester. According to the American Radiology Society, exposition to a radiation dose lower than 5 rads does not considerably increase the risk of foetal damage. For this reason, if a certain radiologic procedure is highly suggested, it should be performed after a careful discussion with the patient regarding cost/benefit ratios and after exclusion of any additional diagnostic procedures that are safer but equally effective.
