Cyclosporin A

Cyclosporine has effect mostly on lymphocytes, decreasing T-lymphocyte activity as well as decreasing lym-phokine synthesis [8]. Cyclosporine A is indicated in when purine analogue treatment is not sufficient. The only study which showed effectiveness of cyclosporine A in the treatment of active CD was that of Brynskov's, which described remission in 59% of patients treated with cyclosporine vs. 38% of patients in the placebo group. Decreasing the dose of a drug and its use as a supportive treatment did not result in further improvement [13]. Another study showed direct short-term improvement in 85% of patients with intestinal fistula and a long term effect of treatment in 54% of patients [14].
