Prognosis

Combined modality therapy (CMT), that is, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, will result in cure of up to 90% of patients with HD. About 10-20% of patients with advanced-stage HD may relapse after treatment. Table 15-16 summarizes the treatment results in children with early-stage HD (stages I, IIA, IIIA, and no bulky medi-astinal disease), and Table 15-17 lists the treatment results in children with advanced-stage HD (stages IIB, IIIB, IV, and bulky mediastinal disease) attained prior to the present-day approach to the treatment of HD, which has been designed to reduce long-term toxicity.
