Blunt dissection (using only fingers) is used through the substantial fat layer found between the skin and the connective tissue overlying the abdominal cavity. A 5-7.5 cm incision is made in the linea alba (midven-tral connective tissue between abdominal muscles) to reveal the abdominal region. The abdominal cavity is entered by poking with a finger to pierce the peritoneum and then enlarging the hole to the size of the incision in the linea alba. The rectum usually remains empty until just before and during defecation, when stool enters it either as a result of a mass propulsive movement or by voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles.
