Micturition Involves Autonomic and Somatic Nerves

Micturition (urination), the periodic emptying of the bladder, is a complex act involving both autonomic and somatic nerve pathways and several reflexes that can be either inhibited or facilitated by higher centers in the brain. The basic reflexes occur at the level of the sacral spinal cord and are modified by centers in the midbrain and cerebral cortex. Distension of the bladder is sensed by stretch receptors in the bladder wall these induce reflex contraction of the detrusor and relaxation of the internal and external sphincters. This reflex is released by removing inhibitory influences from the cerebral cortex. Fluid flow through the urethra reflexively causes further contraction of the detrusor and relaxation of the external sphincter. Increased parasympathetic nerve activity stimulates contraction of the detrusor and relaxation of the internal sphincter. Sympathetic innervation is not essential for micturition. During micturition, the perineal and levator ani muscles relax,...

Abnormal findings

In severe constipation, faeces can be palpable in any part of the colon. Indentation of a lump by finger pressure is evidence that it is faecal. Sometimes, however, a hard, craggy lump of faeces can only be distinguished from malignancy by re-examination following defecation. Enlargement of the bladder, ovary or uterus, suspected from inspection, may be confirmed as a dome-shaped swelling rising from the pubis. An upper abdominal mass which does not move on respiration is either a fixed retroperitoneal structure (e.g. aorta or pancreas) or is attached to the abdominal wall. Masses which arc situated within the abdominal wall continue to be palpable when the muscles are contracted, for example by raising the head off the pillow. Tightening the abdominal muscles in this way identifies the intersections of the recti abdominis (Fig. 5.9). An intersection may mislead (lie beginner into believing that a tumour or the liver edge has been felt. Masses situated more deeply within the abdominal...

Embryo Collection Protocol from Petters laboratory

Blunt dissection (using only fingers) is used through the substantial fat layer found between the skin and the connective tissue overlying the abdominal cavity. A 5-7.5 cm incision is made in the linea alba (midven-tral connective tissue between abdominal muscles) to reveal the abdominal region. The abdominal cavity is entered by poking with a finger to pierce the peritoneum and then enlarging the hole to the size of the incision in the linea alba. One reproductive tract is exteriorized at a time, and the oviducts flushed with sterile medium (see below). After both sides have been flushed, the reproductive tracts are carefully returned to the abdominal cavity and the incisions closed immediately unless the animal is to be held for use as an embryo recipient (see below).

Inspiration and Expiration

Human Expiration

Quiet expiration is a passive process. After becoming stretched by contractions of the diaphragm and thoracic muscles, the thorax and lungs recoil as a result of their elastic tension when the respiratory muscles relax. The decrease in lung volume raises the pressure within the alveoli above the atmospheric pressure and pushes the air out. During forced expiration, the internal intercostal muscles (excluding the interchondral part) contract and depress the rib cage. The abdominal muscles also aid expiration because, when they contract, they force abdominal organs up against the diaphragm and further decrease the volume of the thorax. By this means, the intrapulmonary pressure can rise 20 or 30 mmHg above the atmospheric pressure. The events that occur during inspiration Expiration, aided by contraction of abdominal muscles and

Superficial muscles. The left rectus sheath is cut away to expose the rectus abdominis muscle. Thoracic and Abdominal Muscles. Superficial muscles. The left rectus sheath is cut away to expose the rectus abdominis muscle. Thoracic and Abdominal Muscles. Deep muscles. On the anatomical right, the external abdominal oblique has been removed to expose the internal abdominal oblique and the pectoralis major has been removed to expose the pectoralis minor. On the anatomical left, the internal abdominal oblique has been cut to expose the transversus abdominis, and the rectus abdominis has been cut to expose the posterior rectus sheath.

Defecation Involves the Neural Coordination of Muscles in the Large Intestine and Pelvic Floor

Distension of the rectum by the mass movement of feces or gas results in an urge to defecate or release flatus. CNS processing of mechanosensory information from the rectum is the underlying mechanism for this sensation. Local processing of the mechanosensory information in the enteric neural circuits activates the motor program for relaxation of the internal anal sphincter. At this stage of rectal distension, voluntary contraction of the external anal sphincter and the pu-borectalis muscle prevents leakage. The decision to defecate at this stage is voluntary. When the decision is made, commands from the brain to the sacral cord shut off the excitatory input to the external sphincter and levator ani muscles. Additional skeletal motor commands contract the abdominal muscles and diaphragm to increase intra-abdominal pressure. Coordination of the skeletal muscle components of defecation results in a straightening of the anorectal angle, descent of the pelvic floor, and opening of the...

The Gastrointestinal Tract and Its Control

The rectum usually remains empty until just before and during defecation, when stool enters it either as a result of a mass propulsive movement or by voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles. In a manner similar to what happens when the bladder initiates urination, filling of the rectum with stool causes nerve endings in the rectal wall to transmit a message of fullness to an area of the spinal cord that is involved in bowel function. As stool leaves the rectum, it passes through the anal canal, which contains the internal and external sphincter muscles. The sphincters, ring-shaped muscles that control the opening and closing of the passageway from the rectum, normally are contracted to prevent leakage. The internal sphincter is under the control of the spinal cord its relaxation is what is termed an involuntary reflex because it is not under conscious control, and its relaxation depends only on stretching of the rectal wall by stool. In contrast, the external sphincter is under...

Respiratory System

Inspiration is always an active process, whereas expiration results from the passive elastic recoil of the lung tissue. However, active expiration is possible by contracting muscles that pull the ribs down and by using abdominal muscles to push the diaphragm farther into the thoracic (chest) cavity.

Monozygotic Twins

Cleavage Embryonic Disc Conjoined Twins

Labor itself is divided into three stages 1) effacement (thinning and shortening) and dilatation of the cervix this stage ends when the cervix is fully dilated 2) delivery of the fetus and 3) delivery of the placenta and fetal membranes. Stage 1 is produced by uterine contractions that force the am-niotic sac against the cervical canal like a wedge or, if the membranes have ruptured, then pressure will be exerted by the presenting part of the fetus, usually the head. Stage 2 is also assisted by uterine contractions, but the most important force is provided by increased intra-abdominal pressure from contraction of abdominal muscles. Stage 3 requires uterine contractions and is aided by increasing intra-abdominal pressure.

Procedure

Oviduct Mouse Bursa

Withdraw the pipette and release the fat pad from the serrafine forceps. Using a pair of fine forceps to lift the abdominal muscle wall incision and the curved blunt forceps to manipulate the ovarian fat pad, return the uterus, oviduct and ovary to the abdominal cavity. Try to do so by handling the fat pad only. Then close the wound in the skin with skin clips.

Palpation

Palpation can be conveniently divided into three phases light, deep and palpation during respiration. The tendency to contract the abdominal muscles may be minimised by ensuring that the patient is warm and comfortable and by-gaining the patient's confidence with a gentle approach. The rlipping technique may be useful during deep palpation in patients with marked ascites to detect the presence of hepatic or splenic enlargement and map the outlines of enlarged organs or of tumours that might otherwise have been missed because of the ascites. The sudden displacement of liquid gives a tapping sensation over the surface of the liver or spleen similar to a patellar tap (p. 284).

Insect Facts

Sound production and reception are also used for mate location. The sound generated by a female mosquito's beating wings in flight is picked up by the male mosquito's antennae. Male ho-mopterans and orthopterans produce songs of courtship. Cicadas use abdominal muscles and a resonating chamber for sound production. Grasshoppers and crickets rub their wings and or legs together. Sound receptors, eardrums of females in these orders, are found on their forelegs or first abdominal segments. Sound production and reception vary with temperature.

Surgical Treatment

Logical examination excision in the muscular tissue is recommended, often with the sacrifice of most abdominal wall muscles. It is therefore important to treat DTs when they are small, otherwise a large mus-culoaponeurotic defect of the abdominal wall requires reconstruction with synthetic devices or myocuta-neous flaps. However, some authors 16, 26, 114 maintain that surgery is not advisable even for DTs of the abdominal wall. In fact, the recurrence rate varies from 25 to 100 of cases, even when the DT has been radically resected 13,15, 87 and the iterative operation can provoke the development of DT within the mesentery 18, 21-31 . Against imperative surgery, it must be considered that DTs can cease to grow 27 or even regress spontaneously 14,33 . We are in favour of surgery for this type of DT, but believe it necessary to adopt a chemoprevention of the recurrence just after surgery. We treated 15 abdominal-wall DTs with radical surgery and employed SERMs as adjuvant therapy in the...
